Harvest Festival comes to Sonoma Garden Park

The Sonoma Garden Park is celebrating the fall harvest season with a Community Harvest Festival on Saturday October 24,, 2009 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. The 16th annual festival is a celebration of the bounty of local food as well as Sonoma’s connection with agriculture and diverse community.

This year’s festival will feature a “Día de los Muertos” altar exhibit, facilitated by members of the community and the Arts Guild of Sonoma. The Saturday Harvest Market will also be on-going throughout the festival, where visitors can pick up fall produce, home grown popcorn, and pumpkins from the pumpkin patch.

The second annual pie competition will feature some stiff competition and be judged by several local celebrity judges.  To participate in the contest, be sure to drop off a pie no later that 12:45 p.m. on the day of the event.

New this year is a salsa judging contest has also been added.  To enter, get your salsa in by noon. Please note that pies and salsa made using local and sustainably grown ingredients get bonus points from the judges.

As is tradition, there will be a scarecrow building competition, tractor rides for children, a straw-bale fort, local food and beverages, and a raffle featuring some amazing local prizes. The Arts Guild of Sonoma will also be offering 2 children’s mask making workshops, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Live music from the Green String Farm Band and students from The Sonoma Music Arts School will also be part of the celebration.

There is a donation of $5 for admission, and children 12 and under are free. The Sonoma Ecology Center is encouraging festival-goers to walk, bike, or carpool to the Community Harvest Festival.
