He was an “unsung” hero during WWII serving perilously as a US Merchant Marine providing much needed war supplies and food to our fighting forces around the world. Upon returning home, he met and married his wife and loving companion of 63 years, Milly Kelly, and had three children. He was a graduate of San Francisco State University and was employed as a horticulturist at the UC Berkley Blake Garden. Upon retiring, he and Milly became the owners/operators of the Hotel Ione for seven years. Bill is preceded in death by his son, Stephen Jones.
He leaves behind his partner and soul mate, Milly, his daughters; Truly Roberts of Ione, and Kathy Jones of Sonoma; his sister, Cedora Scheiblich of Sonoma; his daughter-in-law, Paula Jones of Ione; his grandchildren, Jason Schindler of Antioch, Jennifer O’Dell of Concord, Lise Zarate of Sacramento, Julia Burns, Stephen Jones, Jr., Shaina Jones and Benjamin Jones of Ione, and Krista Dupree serving in the US Army; along with his 13 great-grandchildren; and 65 nieces and nephews including Patrick Scheiblich and Melania, Charlie and Cedora Mahoney of Sonoma. The family will celebrate his life at a private ceremony with interment at the Sonoma City Cemetery. If you desire, in lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Amador Stars, the Hospice of Amador, or the ARC of Amador and Calaveras Counties.
