Mission Square appeal withdrawn from council calendar

The appeal of a planning commission ruling that halted the proposed Mission Square project at 213 East Spain St. has been removed from the city council agenda by the developer.
The project, a mix of 16 apartments and 3,500 sq. ft. of office space, had been scaled down from earlier versions, but was still contested by neighbors and The Sonoma League for Historic Preservation. The planning commission voted 4-3 last month not to certify the Environmental Impact Report, the first step in the construction process.
The city council could have overruled that decision. Instead, according to city staff, architect Bill Willers will explore amending the EIR to address newly raised concerns.
If at all changed, the planning commission will hear the updated EIR.

Final ballot for city council?

The deadline to file official papers to run for one of three seats on the Sonoma City Council was yesterday, August 11. With just 24 hours to go, eight prospective candidates have taken out nomination forms from city hall.
New to the list this week is Jeff  Shoemaker, who joins Tom Rouse, Mike Gillaspie, Antoinette (Toni) Castrone, David Cook and Fred Martin. Incumbents Ken Borwn and Steve Barbose have also declared their candidacy.
There is no primary in advance of the November 2 election, from which the three top vote-getters will be seated on the council.
The other two seats on the council, now held by Laurie Gallian and Joanne Sanders, will be contested in 2012.

Hospital names CFO

Sonoma Valley Hospital has tabbed Rob Feldman as the facility’s interim Chief Financial Officer.
An expert in hospital finance, Feldman, familiar to hospital officials as a consultant for the Napa State Hospital partnership, will replace the outgoing Tim Noakes.
The two worked together at O’Connor Hospital in San Jose.
Feldman earned an MBA at Cal, with an emphasis on health care and finance, before beginning his career with the accountant firm that became Ernst and Young.

New director of Curriculum and Instruction

Tuesday night’s August school board meeting was mainly “housekeeping” with the exception of the announcement of the new Director of Curriculum & Instruction.  Sonoma Valley Unified School District Superintendent Louann Carlomagno introduced Lynn Fitzpatrick from the Sonoma County Office of Education to fill the role.
Prior to her work as a Language Arts Specialist with SoCAT, Fitzpatrick served as an English teacher, a literacy coach and the curriculum coordinator with Santa Rosa City Schools as well as a two-year term as educator in residence with Sonoma State University’s School of Education. She also brings an extensive background in Special Education, having worked as a Resource Specialist at both the middle school and high school levels over a period of more than twenty years.
Many certificated staff members have worked with Fitzpatrick over the past three years in her role as a member of the Sonoma County Achievement Team (SoCat). She has collaborated with both teachers and administrators at all levels of the district.
Prior to hiring Fitzpatrick, the district had selected Kathleen Biermann for the position.  Due to personal reasons, Bierman requested a release from her contract before starting work.
