Election incentives: vote, shop and save local

Posted on October 27, 2010 by Sonoma Valley Sun

As an incentive to get people to the polls on November 2, Readers’ Books is offering a 20 percent discount to anyone who comes to the store that day with an “I Voted” pin or an absentee voter chit.

“This is our way of getting as many folks to polls as possible,” said owner Andy Weinberger.

The idea caught on with other local businesses: nearly 30 have joined the get-out-the-vote effort. “Other merchants have joined us in this notion, although what they are offering their customers varies from place to place,” he said.

Weinberger said that the drive is important because “many fewer people vote in the midterm elections, and those that do are frequently angry or somewhat deranged. Voting when angry in my view is like going grocery shopping when you’re starving… not a smart idea. It would be better, fairer, at least, if everyone voted.”
