Program seeks algebra tutors for middle school

Posted on November 17, 2010 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The Aiming High program, sponsored by the Sonoma County Office of Education, is seeking volunteer algebra tutors to work with students at Adele Harrison Middle School.   This is an after-school program designed to improve algebra skills by providing tutors to work with students, led by a classroom teacher.

Principal Karla Conroy is excited to provide this opportunity for students.  “Our students all want to learn and come with such varied ability levels that some just need more time and practice to master the skills needed to be successful in math,” she said.

The Aiming High program format will provide teachers and the volunteers with the support and structure to work with small groups of students, she said, specifically in the areas they need more instruction in.

“All middle school students must be prepared to take Algebra 1 in high school and this program will give us the opportunity to ensure that all students are ready,” Conroy said.

Beginning in Jan., volunteer tutors will work with groups of three or four students after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.  The one-hour program is divided into two segments:  45 minutes for skill building and 15 minutes for homework help.   Students will be pre-tested to determine the areas where they need assistance.

Volunteers are required to submit a written application and undergo fingerprinting and a TB test.  A volunteer site coordinator is also needed to act as a liaison between teachers and volunteers.

An informational session will be held on Dec. 3, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Myron DeLong room at the Sonoma Valley Library.  For more information or to volunteer, contact  Barbara Fisher at  573-3399 X122 or [email protected].
