Hello, goodbye at City Council meeting

Posted on November 26, 2010 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The Dec. 1 meeting that will see Tom Rouse sworn in as the newest member of the Sonoma City Council will also be the finale for August Sebastiani after a four-year term.

The ceremonial session will include the naming of Sonoma’s new mayor.

Along with Rouse, Councilmembers Steve Barbose and Ken Brown, who retained their seats in the Nov. race, will be presented with a Certificate of Election and take the oath of office.

Mayor Pro Tem Sebastiani will present the honorary Mayor’s gavel to Mayor Barbose, whose year in the largely ceremonial post ends with a majority vote choosing his successor.

Traditionally, the post rotates based on length of service. If that protocol holds true, Laurie Gallian will be named to the post. Brown was mayor in 2009, and Joanne Sanders has also held the title.

As Mayor Pro Tempore (essentially the vice mayor) Sebastiani would have likely been named mayor for 2011. It will now be up to the newly seated council to select the two open positions; the new mayor assumes the role immediately and takes control of the meeting.

In his final act as mayor, Steve Barbose will present a plaque recognizing Sebastiani’s service to the council and the community.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the community meeting room at 177 First St. West. It will be broadcast live on Sun TV Channel 27. For a schedule of repeat broadcasts, see sonomasuntv.com.
