Previous Market chair wins contract

Posted on December 16, 2010 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The Sonoma City Council voted unanimously Wednesday night to hire a group headed by Bill Dardon to manage the Tuesday night Farmers Market in 2011.

The council opted for the proposal of the Valley of the Moon Certified Farmers Market over the contending group, headed by Irene Morgan.

Choosing not to participate in the process was the organization that had operated the market for some 20 years. Dardon served as chair of that board last spring, and was credited with bringing a sense of transparency and accountability to the embattled group.

The VMCFM proposal was presented by Pat Coleman, who pointed to a track record of success. She promised a diversity of vendors and said the area to the north of City Hall will be used for youth programs.

  1. Congrats on your selection. Please keep the Farmers Market just that, for farm produce and products related to farming and please keep it populated with a resounding majority of local Sonoma Valley vendors and artisans. In my opinion in past years there was hardly a produce vendor (all prepared canned foods, off the wall vendors, and unrelated junk foods) and I got the feeling they were from farms out of The Valley.

It would be nice to have some ethnic specialties(Mexican, Italian, German, Thai, Chinese, Nepali, etc).

Also, please keep the market entertainment high quality with good local talent. Music and the arts are also greatly appreciated to make it a fun family atmosphere.

As for the politics…please keep the drama to a minimum. If its reasonable, be reasonable. Live and let live. Don’t make mountains out of molehills. A flag here and there, a politician strolling through…what’s the big deal. Manage the excess and:

“Just keep bagging the elephants, let the others swat their own flies”
