Rotary honors Sonomans with Paul Harris Fellow Awards

Posted on February 10, 2011 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Honored at a recent Rotary Club meeting for their invaluable work with teens were Sonomans Jean Hopeman and Rebecca Hermosillo. They are pictured here with Esther Oros – one of the founders of the “Lovin Oven” baking program of which Hermosillo is a mentor – and Rotarian Art Fichtenberg.

At last month’s Rotary Club meeting Rotarian Art Fichtenberg presented Jean Hopeman and Rebecca Hermosillo service awards from The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.  Each received a plaque and lapel pin as Paul Harris Fellows in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among people of the world.

Paul Harris founded the first Rotary Club in Chicago in Dec. 1945.  The main objective of Rotary is service in the community, workplace and throughout the world.  Rotarians foster and encourage the ideal of “service above self” through the betterment of business and professional ethics, promoting international goodwill and understanding and providing humanitarian service.

Jean Hopeman and Rebecca Hermosillo have worked for several years to sustain and promote the activities of the Sonoma Valley Teen Services, which includes the Valley of the Moon Teen Center, the No-Name Café, Teen Safe Ride and The Shop.  Hermosillo is the Program Manager of the teen center, where she works with teens involved in baking and art programs as well as monitors homework and gym activities.  Hopeman serves on the Sonoma Valley Teen Services board and worked for seven years to make the new teen center building a reality by writing grants, planning fundraisers and administering the construction activity with Art Fichtenberg, who served on the construction committee and as a board member.  She was also honored for her work with other non-profit organizations, such as Master Gardeners, Sonoma Valley Soroptimist Club, and St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.

  1. Congrats on some fine works and a great program there at the Teen Center. Solid business skills is essential and education is the key. Nothing better than a live classroom. You make us proud!
