Staples coming to Sonoma

Posted on March 9, 2011 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Previously the location of Holder Ford, the long empty building at W. Napa and Riverside has found a new tenant – the business supply giant, Staples.

The property has been vacant since Chuck Holder took a buy-out from the Ford Motor Company in August of 2009. He still owns the property, and said the lease negotiations with Staples, now finalized, began about a year ago.

The Sonoma location should open later this year.

The company has 2,000 stores worldwide in 26 countries. Nearby locations include Petaluma, Napa, Novato and Santa Rosa.

Staples has submitted tenant improvement plans, said City Planner David Goodison, and requested a building permit. Although consideration by the city’s Design Review Board will be part of the process, no approval is needed by the Planning Commission as the property is zoned for commercial use.

A previous proposal for the space was put forward by CVS Pharmacy, which wanted to add a drive-through window to the structure at 977 W. Napa St. The Planning Commission was cold to that idea, as were neighbors concerned with noise, and CVS lost interest in the project. At that point, Holder said, he began negotiations with Staples.

this bullshit! You would think that the city could find tax
revenue some other way!Just burry a little mom and pop
that has been here serving the comunity for 30 years.
Goodison has his head in his ass!

  3. Dear Hometown Sonoma: What’s up? When did we
ever NEED a BIG BOX STORE? Slow-Noma needs
to re-think this issue. Leases are just pieces of paper
and can be torn up, NOW! Leave us alone. We will
shop where we must, not in our hometown – leave
us alone & go back to Napr or Petaluma – both
    18 miles from here.

  5. Dear good citizens and ignorant trolls of Sonoma hear ye my opinion on the Staples matter:

I for one am glad Staples is coming to Sonoma. Why thou might hatefully wonder? With good expectations, I believe this successful office supply store will provide some needed jobs, revenue and positive improvements to the city of Sonoma.

Just because a small mom and poop store exists in Sonoma does not mean that the establishment has what I need. Your only argument is that I have to shop there because you trolls say I do. This is America damn it! I can shop where I want! Sonoma does not belong only to you old crusty fart bags who think you have the right to dictate to others. Do we prevent your ignorant asses from earning a living? I think you all sound like red neck hillybillies who soil the beauty of living in Sonoma with your discriminatory, and Stepford wives attitudes.

  7. For one, I find my needs requiring trips to Napa or Petaluma/SR for these products because of price of selection and I still frequent the local mom and pop stores and the CVS/Rite Aids.

I look at it this way, a vacant building has potential to be occupied, the City has tax revenue capability, and the people have greater selection and will save fuel (eco-green friendly) and not drive out of town. The location does not lend itself to a giant box store but more like a smaller store in San Francisco or other comparable. Parking is limited as is space. It won’t get out of hand. Geography limits it.

The Owner can generate cash flow from a limited use property and the tenant improvements will bring it into a more multi-purpose format. So if Staples fails in a few years and pulls out, the building is already configured out of the car dealership limited use with garages, and into a multi-use traditional retail space. And…the owner can benefit from tenant improvements paid for by Staples, and a longer term lease even if the store closes.

So all in all, I don’t see significant impact to the mom and pops, the Cittislow-Slow noma attitude remains, we won’t forget the locals, and the community benefits from proximity and pricing competition. Ain’t that America?
