Assemblymember Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) today presented his 2011 Woman of the Year Award to Sonoma Valley resident Mary Evelyn Arnold.

Pictured at the Capitol ceremony are Huffman (far right) with Mary Evelyn Arnold (center), his 2011 Woman of the Year. Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal, Speaker of the Assembly John Perez and Assembly Minority Floor Leader Connie Conway are also pictured.

A well-known volunteer throughout Sonoma, Mary Evelyn Arnold is a member of the Sonoma County Library Commission, treasurer of the Vintage House board, organizer of the Wednesday cooking “crew” at Meals on Wheels, birthday cake baker for WillMar Center, and “unofficial cat cuddler” at Pets Lifeline. She was recently named Sonoma’s Honorary Alcalde.

Arnold’s generosity and vast contributions are immeasurable, Huffman said.

“I am extremely honored to present this award to Mary Evelyn,” said Huffman. “The contributions she has made to the entire Sonoma Valley community make this award well deserved. I applaud her volunteerism and community spirit.”

During today’s ceremony recognizing the State Assembly selections for 2011 Woman of the Year, Arnold was acknowledged for her accomplishments and for her civic involvement and community service. The day of celebration included a Legislative Women’s Caucus Brunch Reception hosted by Attorney General Kamala Harris, Secretary of State Debra Bowen and Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom and a recognition ceremony in the Assembly Chamber.

The Woman of the Year celebration is an annual event sponsored by the California Legislative Women’s Caucus where a woman from each Assembly District is selected by the respective State Assembly representative to receive recognition for her accomplishments and service.
