Love to Japan

Posted on March 23, 2011 by Sonoma Valley Sun

A benefit for the people of earthquake-ravaged Japan will be held Sunday afternoon at the Moose Lodge.

“Something had to be done,” said Karen Stern, one of the organizers of the noon to 6 p.m. party dubbed “Love to Japan from Sonoma.”

There is no admission charge, but donations will be taken at the door and routed to Japan through the Red Cross. The afternoon includes live music from six bands and activities for kids. Food and drinks will be sold, with all proceeds going to the charity cause.

When she learned that Penny Byrd (a.k.a. Po-Po the Clown) was working on a benefit, the two joined forces. “It’s coming together great,” Stern said.

A full-time accountant with three teenage sons, Stern has somehow found the time to mobilize hundreds of volunteers. “The response has been amazing,” she said. “People in this Valley really come together for this kind of thing.”

The line-up of musicians: Carter and Bodlovich Guitar Du; Emer & Barrett Trio with guests Eddie and Mad Duran; Choro Quintet featuring Aldo Mosca; Los Differentes del Ritmo; Creatures of Habit; and Tuto Bem.
