Pipeline project to improve sewer, boost recycled water

A $2.3 million project to replace an aging sewer line that crosses 16 private properties has begun southeast of Sonoma.

The Sonoma Valley County Sanitation District will replace a 5,700-foot section of the main sewer system between Watmaugh Road East, east of Shainsky Road, and the wastewater treatment plant at 22675 8th Street East.

The project, to include the installation of a recycled water pipeline, is scheduled for completion by Nov. 1.

“The District’s sewage collection system is aging, with a majority of its pipelines reaching 50 years or older,” said Water Agency Director Valerie Brown.

The location was determined to be a priority under the District’s capital improvement plan to replace aging and structurally deficient pipes that deliver wastewater to the treatment plant.

The 50-year-old existing sewer, constructed of reinforced concrete pipe, will be replaced with new PVC pipe material ranging in size from 30 inches to 42 inches in diameter. Construction activities will include open-cut trenching under a portion of Schell Creek.

The installation of a recycled water main pipe will parallel the District’s main sewer trunk replacement project. The two pipes are being installed concurrently to save time and money. The project is being funded in part with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds.

Recycled water will be produced at the wastewater treatment plant and delivered by new pipelines throughout the District for agriculture, landscaping, and restoration of the Napa Salt Marsh. Additional storage and pumping capacity will be added as needed.

“Recycled water will help to ensure that there is a reliable, environmentally beneficial water supply to support the needs of our communities and economies,” said Brown. The project will also create jobs, she said.

To learn more about the District and its capital improvement plans, the public is encouraged to register for a free tour of its treatment plant and meet with staff on Friday, Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m.  Registration is required to Brad Sherwood at 547.1927 or [email protected] Provide your name, phone number and street address.
