Univision, the largest Hispanic radio and television chain in the United States, selected Sonoma Valley resident Ahtziri Fonseca, radio host on local KSVY Sun FM 91.3, as winner of this year’s $50,000 scholarship, one of the Premios Juventud 2011 (2011Youth Prizes), awarded in conjunction with JC Penney.

The final selection process for the scholarship took place on July 22nd in Miami, FL during the annual program, which recognizes rising young actors and musicians in the footsteps of Ricky Martin and Antonio Banderas.

During her presentation, Fonseca stood out from the other two finalists for her academic achievement, her dedication to her family, and her community service through various local agencies, especially participation on “Voces Juveniles”, airing Saturday mornings on KSVY Sun FM. Univision cameramen had come to Sonoma several weeks previous to film her, including a segment “on the air” in the KSVY radio booth.

Fonseca, who attended Flowery Elementary School and Adele Harrison Middle School, graduated this June from Sonoma Academy in Santa Rosa. She will enter prestigious Pomona College this fall, to start on her path toward a career in neurosurgery.

Back in Sonoma, Fonseca gave an exclusive interview to host Luis Hernández of KSVY’s Mañanas en Sonoma, talking about her three-day experience in Miami at the competition, and her short and long-term plans.
