Six dozen donuts, to go

Posted on March 20, 2012 by Sonoma Valley Sun

In a stunt to speed into the Guinness Book of World Records, 75 cars simultaneously performed tire-screeching donuts at Infineon Raceway on Tuesday. After the smoke cleared, the previous world record of 57 cars, set in Australia in 2010, had been rubbed out.

The cars were piloted by drivers from across Northern California who participate in the raceway’s weekly Sonoma Drift powered by NOS program. Now in its second year, the program provides drifters a safe, legal and controlled environment in which to hone their skills.

“That was a blast, I’ve never seen anything as big as that,” said professional drifter and San Francisco native Calvin Wan. “That was just a great time.”

More than 300 fans were on hand to witness the record breaking attempt, which took place in the raceway’s main paddock under cloudy skies. All drifters and spectators were admitted free into the raceway.

Drifting continues on Wednesday for the third week of Sonoma Drift powered by NOS action. Drifting runs alongside the STP Wednesday Night Drags for most Wednesday evenings through Nov. 14. Gates open at 4 p.m. Drifters can pre-register online at InfineonRaceway.com/SonomaDrift or by calling 800-870-RACE (7223).
