The first Todd Trust grant recipients pose for a photo at a reception held recently in their honor at the Sonoma Valley Grange. They are, left to right: Kara Reyes from La Luz; Alejandra Cervantes and Richard Dale of the Sonoma Ecology Center; Kathleen Archer of St. Joseph’s Health System; School Superintendent Louann Carlomagno and Susan Reber from the Sonoma Valley Education Foundation.

The first of a series of grants from the Roland and Hazel Todd Trust have been awarded according to Community Foundation Sonoma County and its affiliate, the Sonoma Valley Fund.  The Todds were devoted to Sonoma County, and Sonoma Valley more specifically, so the organizations that were awarded these grants help to honor their legacy while providing critical support to the people that they serve.

Community Foundation Sonoma County awarded a challenge grant of $100,000 to St. Joseph Health System of Sonoma County to continue dental services to low income residents in the Springs area through purchasing a replacement mobile dental van. Sonoma Ecology Center received $35,300 for assistance in creating a community garden for Spring’s residents at the County’s Larson Park in Agua Caliente.  A $25,000 grant was awarded to the Sonoma Valley Education Foundation for the 2012 Sonoma Valley Youth Initiative. La Luz Bilingual Center was given $12,000 to provide emergency rental assistance for low income Sonoma Valley residents in crisis.

Hazel and Roland Todd outlined some specific areas of interest in their trust that helped provide a picture of their legacy goals.  Last year, Community Foundation Sonoma County determined that the initial focus of grants would be in the Springs area of Sonoma Valley.  “We understood that if access to critical services such as health care, adult education, and safety net services could be made more easily available to residents in this area, the impact would be significant,” said Harriet Derwingson, Community Foundation Sonoma County board member and chair of the Todd Trust Committee.

“Hazel and Roland Todd cared deeply about the health and well-being of residents in their community, and we are honored to steward their gift by supporting such vital services,” said Barbara Hughes, president and CEO of Community Foundation Sonoma County.
