A garden grows in Larson Park

Springs Community Garden Coalition members do some heavy digging to prepare Larson Park for its new garden site..

Thanks to recent support from the Todd Trust, the Springs Community Garden Coalition will see its dreams come true when Larson Park adds a Community Garden component this summer.  In the works for close to three years, the so-called “food desert” will instead become a half-acre oasis of garden beds growing an assortment of organic produce to feed the residents of the Springs.

“Sonoma Ecology Center, in collaboration with the Springs Community Garden Coalition, is thrilled to have the support of the Todd Trust to further cultivate the Community Garden at Larson Regional Park.  The site will provide the Springs with the first ever community garden, which will allow approximately 28 raised garden beds, some of which will be ADA accessible, to be leased on an annual basis. We are confident that the garden will be a positive addition to the park and the Springs community as a whole.”

Neighbors and the general public can learn more about the future Larson Park Community Garden at an informational meeting on Saturday, June 30 from noon to 1 p.m. with a potluck immediately following. Participants will learn about the project including how to rent an annual garden plot, current volunteer needs, and garden sponsorship and support opportunities.

The Community Garden at Larson Park is a project of the Springs Community Garden Coalition, a collaborative of Sonoma County Regional Parks, Sonoma Ecology Center, Nuestra Voz, St. Josephs Health System, and Trinity Episcopal Church. The Coalition plans to install the garden in July. The June 30 meeting will provide members of the community with the opportunity to visit the site, learn about the project, and sign up for a garden plot.

The meeting and potluck are a zero waste event, so people are asked to bring their own reusable plates, utensils, and cups. Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite dish to share with the community.

The Community Garden at Larson Park is administered by the Springs Community Garden Coalition. For more information contact Jessica Glatt at 996.0712 x110, or email [email protected].
