The man killed when a truck struck his bicycle on Eight Street East was identified Tuesday by the Napa CHP as Brian Laurie, 68, of Sonoma.

Laurie was riding on the shoulder of the southbound lane, south of Denmark Road, at the time of the late afternoon accident. The CHP said he began a left-hand turn, making a signal with his left arm, and rode into the oncoming truck.

The driver of the big rig, Carlos Linarez, 46, of Vallejo, told officers that he applied the brakes and turned to his left when he saw Laurie signal the turn, but was unable to avoid the cyclist. Paramedics took Laurie to Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, where he was pronounced dead.
