Big storms moving in

Posted on November 27, 2012 by Sonoma Valley Sun

A series of windy storms could dump from four to ten inches of rain and cause localized flooding, the National Weather Service predicts.

The first storm will move into the area late tonight and impact the county before sunrise Wednesday. Rain and wind, 15-25 mph with gusts up to 35, will move across the area throughout the day.

There will be a break in the rain and wind before a second storm moves into the area Thursday morning. Heavy rainfall is expected well into the weekend.

The NWS warned today that small creeks and streams may flood as debris clogs channels, storm drains and culvert entrances.

If flood alerts are issued for Sonoma Creek and its tributaries this week, a limited number of free sandbags will be available at City Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sand itself will be available free of charge at Depot Park, 270 First Street West.

The emergency distribution would begin when a flood or flash flood watch is posted by the National Weather Service, according to Public Works Director Milenka Bates.

Residents will need to bring their own shovels. After City Hall closes, residents will need to bring their own bags.

City Public Works personnel will be on duty weekdays and on call after hours and through the weekend. To report flooding or possible flooding, call City Hall at 938.3681 (8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday) or call 911 after hours and weekends to report the flood location. Public Works personnel will respond as quickly as available.
