Royal power couple gets its kicks

Posted on November 28, 2012 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Halli Dobson and Pedro Napoles may be the reigning Sonoma Valley High School Homecoming Queen and King, but they are not resting on their royal laurels. They not only play varsity soccer, they formed an indoor league – for the South American variant Futsal — that numbers 10 teams and some 70 players.

Sonoma Futsal is a new youth sports league dedicated to affording Sonoma Valley kids the chance to have fun during the wet months while developing soccer foot skills.  Games are Sunday afternoons at the Altimira Gym, through February.

Dobson and Pedro Napoles, who started dating last January, founded the league as a senior project. Dobson secured Altimira as the venue as well as a seed loan from SVYSA to get the ball rolling. She and Napoles oversaw registration in October.

“They’ve both participated in the founding of the league, including meeting with our lawyer several times through the incorporation process,” said an impressed Dave Smith, Altimira principal.
The couple are honorary board members (they can’t become full members until they turn 18) and Napoles is the league webmaster.

There’s still time to join the league. There are no practices, just the Sunday games. Futsal is a South American soccer game played on a basketball court by five players on a side, with a small goal on each end.

Technically their 20 hours of senior project time can’t occur until Spring, “but they’ve already put in probably 80 hours,” Smith figured.

Not busy enough? With college in mind, the duo keeps up with schoolwork.

Naploes aspires to attend Carnegie Mellon for computer science and Dobson hopes to attend Cal on her way to becoming a pediatrician.

Prorated registrations are still being accepted.  Stop by and check out this exciting fun game.  An all volunteer non-profit, Sonoma Futsal is looking for volunteers to help.  For more information visit SonomaFutsal.com.
