Beware the bogus $20

Posted on November 29, 2012 by Sonoma Valley Sun

A manager at the CVS store noticed something quirky in the cash drawer — two fake $20 bills, a discovery that gave police a lead in tracking the con man responsible for the scam.

After confirming the bills as bogus, the manager matched the Nov. 22 purchase to the corresponding surveillance video. The tape showed a Hispanic man in his mid-20s to mid-30s paying with the two phony bills.

Police now have a still from that video to help find the suspect, who is still at large.
He first struck on Nov. 19, using five of the bad $20s to buy gift cards at Rite Aid.

After the suspect left the store, staff noticed the flimsy quality of the paper, and called police, who warn retailers and cashiers to be on the lookout for more counterfeits. All of the fakes have the same serial number.
