String theory

Posted on December 3, 2012 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The story of Aladdin and “The 1001 Arabian Nights” comes alive through the artistry of the Fratello Marionnettes on Sunday, Dec. 9, part of the Sonoma Community Center’s Puppet Playhouse series.

Kevin Menegus, one of the principal puppeteers, says working with marionettes, translating the action and emotion through thin strings, is particularly challenging. “There’s no direct contact with the figure,” he says. “All you have working with you is gravity.” Through dramatic staging, intricate costumes and the hand-built puppets, Menegus and company tell the tale of Aladdin, as he thwarts an evil sorcerer, discovers a magical lamp, befriends a powerful genie and saves a princess.

Fun for ages four and above. 1 p.m. $9-$10. Sonoma Community Center, 276 E. Napa St.
