SCC welcomes new artist in residence

Posted on January 3, 2013 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The incoming Artist in Residence at the Sonoma Community Center is ceramicist Julia Feld, who will teach classes and mount a June exhibition as part of the SCC residency program.

Originally from Russia, Feld holds a BFA from San Jose State College and an MFA from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. A talented ceramic artist, she is known for her painterly narratives that enliven three-dimensional ceramic objects and create illusions of interchangeable realities.

Describing her work, Feld said, “I am looking for a three-dimensional space that can hold an external world. A world remembered or imagined from the past, a world that is forced by the inversion to live inside a ceramic sculpture, a world that smoothly transitions from one dimensionality to the other.”

Feld’s extensive exhibition record includes “The Best of American Ceramic Art,” in Beijing, China (2009), “Beyond the Brickyard,” at the Archie Bray Foundation, in Helena, MT, (2010), and “Feats of Clay,” at the Lincoln Arts & Culture Foundation, in Lincoln, CA (2011). She currently sits on the board of the Association of Clay and Glass Artists of California.

“We’re delighted to welcome Julia as our newest Artist in Residence,” said Arts Education and Program Manager Liz Treacy. “We look forward to the new creative possibilities she brings to the studio.”

This winter, Julia will teach an eight-week class at SCC entitled Sculpture for All Levels on Fridays, January 25 to March 15, from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Focusing on sculptural and vessel forms, Feld will share insights into hand building techniques including coil construction, pinching and slabs. Her class will also incorporate majolica and underglazing, techniques for surface decoration that characterize her work.

On Friday, June 7, Feld will exhibit works created during her residency in a month-long show in SCC’s Gallery 212.
