‘No obligation’ mentoring reception

With 130 local children on the waiting list, National Mentoring Month couldn’t come soon enough for the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance. “Now, more than ever, kids need someone to support them, boost their confidence, and give them the encouragement to set goals for their future,” said Executive Director Kathy Witkowicki.

The nonprofit will host an informational reception on Wednesday, January 30, 5:30 to 7 p.m. at MacArthur Place. The ‘no obligation’ event will provide potential mentors a chance to ask questions, get answers, and mix and mingle with mentors who are happy to share their own experiences as volunteers in the Stand By Me Mentoring Program.

“Careful attention is paid up front to assure that the best matches are made, so that the hour a week you spend together is as fun and rewarding as ever,” Witkowicki said. “If you are someone who travels a lot, or would feel more comfortable co-mentoring with a friend or two, we now offer the opportunity to do Group Mentoring.”

On-going training and support is provided, as well as an array of field trips, social events, and extra-curricular activities that help to foster relationships. There is no cost to become a mentor. “Your gift is the time you spend building a trusting, caring friendship,” she said.

The Mentoring Alliance recently celebrated 16 years of mentoring kids. More than 450 currently have a mentor through the program, but many more are waiting their turn.. “These are kids who need and want someone to help them in school and in life,” Witkowicki said, “children with unrealized potential, who could really benefit if someone was there to open the doors to new experiences and challenging opportunities. “
