Green is the new black

Whatever the color, the look this spring is all green. Showcasing haute couture created from recycled materials and repurposed clothing will once again be the Sonoma Community Center’s third annual Trashion Fashion show, set for May 10-11.

Artists, designers and fashionistas are all invited to submit designs for show, with $1,250 in cash, including $200 for “Best in Teen Category,” going to the winners.

This call to artists is open to all individuals, ages nine and above, or groups. The application deadline is 5 p.m. March 15. To download a prospectus and application got to Sonomacommunitycenter.org or the SCC office, 276 E. Napa Street. Or call 938.4626 x3.

The Trashion Show was inspired by SCC’s commitment to promoting sustainable living, Hatcher said. “Trashion springs from a desire to make the best use of limited resources by making traditional and avant-garde clothing or objects from recycled materials or cast off junk.”

The live event features a parade of Trashion models working a real catwalk, to the frenzied delight of the audience. “The work created in previous years has been spectacular,” said Hatcher, who is pleased that so many young people are participating and creating wonderful designs. “It truly is inspirational. I can’t wait to see what people create this year!”
