On Cuba

Posted on March 17, 2013 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Born in Cuba during the first Batista regime, Teofilo Ruiz is now a distinguished professor of history at UCLA, an award-winning author, and a recent recipient of the National Humanities Medal awarded by President Barack Obama. In a March 23 lecture in Sonoma, he discusses Cuba’s history up to the Cuban Revolution, including his experience as a young revolutionary, his imprisonment and release following the Bay of Pigs invasion, and his journey to Miami with “only three changes of clothing, $45, and a box of Cuban cigars to sell.”

His talk includes a reflection on his recent visit to Cuba, after 51 years away, and his thoughts for Cuba’s future. $15 members, $20 general. Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, 551 Broadway. 939.7862. Svma.org.
