From Kenwood to Cairo

Posted on March 26, 2013 by Sonoma Valley Sun

My name is Devon Watkins and this is my story. When I was a little girl at Kenwood Elementary School I dreamed of visiting Egypt, wondering what it would be like to live there.

In 2011 at the age of 19, what started off as a month-long solo journey to Great Britain, turned into a five-month trip throughout the UK, Jordan, and eventually her dream destination, Egypt. There was a revolution happening at the time I was visiting, and even though everyone told her not to go, I had such an uncontrollable desire to experience The Land Of Eternity, I followed my heart and had a great time.

After this first visit to Egypt, I was hooked. I visited again in 2012. After that trip I returned home to Sonoma County where I started working with the father. But my heart was still in the land of the pyramids. I saved my money, sold all of my possessions, bought my ticket and flew back to the land that called me.

After a few weeks in her new apartment on the Nile, I created a business called “Devon’s Egypt” to help people experience what I calls “The Real Egypt”. Visiting a new country where English is not the first language can be scary and off-putting to new travelers, so I came up with the idea to turn the extra room in her apartment into a vacation rental and offer local tours.

I started a blog, not only to provide information on the country but to also secure vacationers a place to stay, and specializing in custom private or small group tours of Cairo and Alexandria, complete with your own private tour guide/driver who speaks and understands English and Arabic. At 21, I’m living my dream and would love to share it with you! If you’re interested in traveling to Egypt, contact me at DevonsEgypt.wordpress.com.
