La Luz receives county grant

La Luz Center has been awarded a $171,139 from First 5 Sonoma County, a state program created to promote and support early childhood development for prenatal to age five.

With the grant money, La Luz will be able to complete the center’s remodel project.

“We are deeply moved by the county’s acknowledgement of our need, and we feel supported and strengthened by their generous gift,” said La Luz Executive Director Juan Hernandez. “It will make a significant difference in our ability to deliver services to the children and families of our community.”

The capital campaign kicked off last summer with a major grant from Impact100 Sonoma.

“Impact100 Sonoma gave us the seed money for this project when they understood our need to give privacy and dignity to our clients,” Hernandez said. “Now this First 5 grant will allow us to complete the project.”

First 5 Sonoma County awards more than $4 million annually on the health, safety, and school readiness of Sonoma County’s youngest citizens. Other grant recipients this year were: Alliance Medical Center; Community Action Partnership of Sonoma County; Community Child Care Council of Sonoma County; Santa Rosa Community Health Centers; and Sonoma County Human Services Department.
