Behind the wire

The exhibit, “Giri: Giving Back – Moving Forward,” now at the Sonoma Valley Library, tells in photographs and oral histories the experience of Japanese Americans during their incarceration in American internment camps during World War II.

Branch Manager Lisa Musgrove said Sonoma County was exemplary in the treatment of Japanese Americans during this period. Neighbors and friends came to the aid of those being relocated to Camp Amache (in the Colorado desert) by paying taxes on their land, and tending their orchards, for example. The “Giri Project” emphasizes in visible, tangible ways the unique interactions among the various communities in Sonoma County, Musgrove said.

The free exhibit, presented by the Japanese American Citizens’ League, runs through June 14. It is an extension of the “Roger Shimomura: Minidoka on My Mind” exhibition, based on the artists internment as a young boy, on display at the Sonoma Valley Museum.

The displays are open to view during the library hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 755 W. Napa St. 996.5217.
