For the troops

Posted on June 8, 2013 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Event Chair Irene Morgan and Sonoma Mayor Ken Brown show off the grand prize for Sonoma’s Quilts for the Troops event, the June 15 dinner dance at Father Roberts Hall. The evening is a fundraiser for the American Legion Jack London Post 489 drive that has sent 500 quilts to overseas veterans. “

Soldiers leaving the hospital in Afghanistan have not a blanket for their body, nor a pillow for their head,” Morgan said. Thanks to the Sonoma effort, “at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield a plane is laden with the quilts, pillows, and pillow cases and leaves for Bagram, Afghanistan to give to the soldiers for their return to the States.” The 6 p.m. tri-tip dinner will be followed by dancing to the band Showcase, with Josh Yenne on steel guitar. The evening includes a raffle for prizes and quilts, including the Nancy Parmalee creation in the photo.

Tickets are $25 advance (call 307.3433) and $35 at the door, 369 Third Street West.
