Life of pie

Posted on October 2, 2013 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Butter, lard or Crisco – what shortening goes into your best pie crust? And the filling: fruit, or are you more of a Meringue type? Dust the flour off of your favorite recipe – or steal Grandma’s – for the juried pie competition on Saturday, October 12. The contest is part of the Fall Festival festivities at Sonoma Garden Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Pies must be 8-10” in size, and any flavor. All pies, including crusts and fillings, must be fully homemade. No purchased crusts or canned fillings. (Not that you’d get away with that). Locally sourced ingredients are highly encouraged.

A panel of local celebrity judges will judge the pies on taste, texture and appearance. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entrants. After the contest, festival-goers can buy slices of the juried pies, with optional ice cream on the side.

Contest registration is accepted in advance or at the door. Entry per pie is $10, and pie contest registrants enjoy free admission to the festival. For more information or to register, please contact Marcia Duval at 996.0712 x111 or [email protected].

Festival admission is waived for all pie contest participants. For general admission, advance tickets are $12 for adult, $5 for kids, and are available at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/454187.
