Fade to black

Blockbuster Manager Janey Eslick, who has worked at the store since it opened 14 years ago, stands among the remaining items as the store readies to close on November 10. And when she says everything must go, she means it – from CDs marked down to 99-cents to store fixtures, the fax machine and the vacuum cleaner. (The candy is long gone.)

From 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Elick invites friends of the store to a farewell party. Over the years, she said, regular customers have grown to be almost like family. “I watched kids grow up… first they’re watching cartoons and the next thing you know they’re renting R-rated movies.”

Looking around the disassembled store, she said, “It’s been a big part of my life.” In that time, what movie caused the biggest rush? “’Transformers,’” she said. “People really went crazy over those.”
