Wedekind's to close at end of year

Posted on November 15, 2013 by Sonoma Valley Sun

After nearly six decades of business, the historic Wedekind’s Garden Center, located at 21095 Broadway in Sonoma, will close at the end of the year.

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose, said Janet Rude, who has owned the business since 1990. Her retirement from leadership of the nursery comes “as my season of purpose there concludes.”

There are no immediate plans for the continuance of business at the nursery location.

Wedekind’s Garden Center has been an independent nursery in the Sonoma Valley serving generations of budding and seasoned gardeners since 1956. Located two miles south of the Sonoma Plaza, Wedekind’s Garden Center became a destination nursery throughout its many decades.

Rude said the nursery has enjoyed a well-established reputation for inspiring displays, excellent selection of premium plants, water features, unique indoor and outdoor garden art, and expert advice from seasoned professionals.

Rude and her professional staff of many years wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to the community of gardeners they have served throughout the years.

Rude said that generations of gardening clientele have brought, in addition to their much appreciated business, many great moments of friendship, compassion, and fellowship — always enhancing the pleasure of serving them. They will all be missed, she said.

Substantial discounts on all merchandise, as well as equipment and fixtures will be offered now through the end of the year.

  1. I just found this article and feel so sad. My association with Wedekinds was one of the highlights of my life. What a beautiful garden center, what great people to work with. I still, after all these years miss Janet and Art. We had a wonderful lunch that lead to dinner of cracker and cheese and wine at our house, what fun.
I’ve never found another garden center that has inspired me so much ….miss you guys so much!!!!!
