Branching out

Posted on December 31, 2013 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Your old Christmas tree might have one more gift left in it. As a fundraiser for 2014 activities, Girl Scouts troops from Sonoma and Glen Ellen are again recycling Christmas trees this year. Trees will be collected for the next two Saturdays: January 4 and 11. Scout teams will pick up Christmas trees in Valley neighborhoods until 3 p.m.

It is not necessary to call to arrange pickup, but rural residents should leave a message at 707-205-1233 with information about finding their tree. There is detailed information on the local Girl Scout website at www.sonomagirlscouts.com/xmas.

There will be four Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador Girl Scout troops participating in the fundraiser this year. All are earning money to take special trips called Destinations, or to travel internationally with their troops. “It’s a fun bonding activity but very tiring too,” says Adrienne Valavanis of Troop 10063. “We’re saving money to go to Switzerland and we hope to stay at the Girl Scout World Centre there.”

To participate, make sure to have the tree on the curb by 9 a.m. and leave a donation ($10 suggested, by check) under the doormat. The Scouts ask that you remove the tree stand and all decorations. Sorry, no wreaths or flocked trees.
