Master Gardener series returns

Sonoma Community Center and the Sonoma Valley Master Gardeners are partnering on a second annual lecture series on home garden care. The free lectures will be held the first Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. at Sonoma Community Center.

Master Gardener Carlyss van Ness kicks off the 2014 series with a talk entitled “The Art of Hydrangeas,” on Saturday, January 11. Van Ness will she share her passion for hydrangeas as she discusses cover water saving techniques, fertilizing, pruning methods, hydrangea varieties, propagating and drying of blooms.

The series continues on Saturday, February 1 with Master Gardener Electra de Peyster and “The Basics of Seed Saving.” Attendees will learn why and how to save seeds in the home garden. De Peyster will also discuss pollination, plant families, population sizes, isolation distances, storage and seed vitality.

The series concludes with “The Wonderful World of Vines,” with Master Gardener Ann Chambers, on March 8. Chambers will share the best in ornamental, living, outdoor art. She will cover the best varieties of fruit-producing and ornamental vines for Sonoma County, including grape, berries, beans and peas. Ann will also bring insight on how to grow and train vines on a trellis, arbor or other structure.

This annual series is offered in conjunction with the Center for Sustainable Living at Sonoma Community Center, which provides environmental education, conservation, and partnerships to promote sustainable communities in Sonoma Valley. Garden Club meets, new location

The Valley of the Moon Garden Club opens its monthly meeting series with a Q and A session with a panel of Master Gardener. Johanna Patri, the club president for 2014, will share a forecast of the year ahead. The monthly meetings include an expert speaker, plant raffle and refreshments, and are free to all. The club’s new meeting place is the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Building.7 p.m.
