Huichica Music Festival sets June lineup

An anti-festival that brings a dozen-plus indie bands together in an intimate setting with a slow-paced vibe and excellent food and libations. “The future of music festivals,” says co-founder Jeff Bundschu, “looks very much like what we’ve been doing with Huichica, in creating a carefully curated experience.”

The fifth annual event takes place June 13-14 at the Gundlach Bundschu Winery, Sonoma, with bands including Mount Eeerie, pictured, and Dave Longstreth (of Dirty Projectors. Two-day passes start at $75.

“The large scale music festival that tries to be all things to all people is at a saturation point,” Bundschu said. “What we offer is an intimate experience, where people have a chance to slow down from the hectic pace of their lives. You have a chance to stop and appreciate things, whether it’s the beauty of the place, the flavor of the wine you’re drinking or food you’re eating, the person next to you, or the music you are hearing.”

It is, Bundschu said, “an antidote to the all-you-can-eat-buffet-style mega-festival.”

Founded by Bundschu and Eric D. Johnson in the 2010, the Huichica (“we-cheek-a”) festival is named for a type of soil predominant on the valley floor vineyards of Gundlach Bundschu Winery.
