Superintendent Louann Carlomagno and the Sonoma Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees are very pleased to announce the selection of Susan Langer as Principal: Preschool & Special Education pending formal Board approval at the June 10th Board Meeting. Ms. Langer will begin her assignment July 1, 2014.

From 1998 to present Ms. Langer has worked for the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) in a number of administrative capacities including K-5 special education principal for the visually impaired program; and special education administrator responsible for speech and language pathologists, nurses, and adaptive physical education teachers. She also worked as a bilingual school psychologist. Ms. Langer began her career in education teaching at a bilingual elementary school in Los Angeles.

Ms. Langer graduated from UCLA in 1990 with a degree in Spanish. Between 1995 and 1998 she completed her teaching credential, received her Masters degree, and school psychologist and counseling credentials from California State University of Dominguez Hills. Ms. Langer received her administrative services credential from Sonoma State University in 2009.
In her new role as Principal: Preschool & Special Education, she will oversee the transition of severely handicapped classrooms from the Sonoma County Office of Education to the district and the district’s expanding preschool programs. Her firsthand experience, knowledge and skills in a range of special education programs ensures that the district’s two newest programs will quickly become a viable academic option within our district.

As an administrator at SCOE, Ms. Langer has worked directly with a number of Sonoma Valley schools, most recently at Dunbar Elementary. In her current assignment she has also trained staff in the implementation of the common core.

Peers and colleagues have described Ms. Langer as “a truly collaborative, resourceful, optimistic, unflappable, and above all passionate about providing all students with a positive, successful school experience.” Superintendent Carlomagno noted that “Ms. Langer is the type of administrator a district only hopes to find! I find her enthusiasm contagious and look forward to working with her in the coming years.”

At the June 10, 2014 Board meeting Ms. Langer, her husband, Bob Herbstman, and her children, Jacob and Leo Herbstman will be formally welcomed to the district.
