Police Blotter: Fast food danger; family feud: drunk of week; and more.

More damage associated with fast food: A Sonoma woman, 40, was turning her Dodge Caravan into Jack in the Box at about 5:30 a.m. on May 21 when she suddenly changed her mind. Though perhaps beneficial to her dietary health, the decision had a disastrous effect on the van: as she abruptly swung back into the street, it crashed into light pole. The crash deployed the van’s air bags, but the woman, alone in the vehicle, was not injured.

Drunk of the Week

An officer on patrol in the otherwise still of the 2:30 a.m. May 16 morning heard the growl of a speeding car approaching Lomita Avenue. The black Mercedes made an extreme, onto-the-shoulder right turn, then stopped at a stop sign – a full 100 feet shy of the crosswalk. “I feel like a (freak)ing idiot,” said the driver, a 26-year-old El Verano man already on probation for a previous DUI. His .127 blood alcohol level earned another such bust, and he was summarily jailed.

You should have been here for Christmas

Family get-togethers often have a particular sense of tension, though it is not usually manifested in physical blows, as was the case of a Mother’s Day gathering on Appleton Way. A woman, 23, told police that she hit her brother, 20, when he grabbed her arm; he then hit back, causing facial bruising and swelling. Root of the problem: their parents always liked him better, she said. No charges were filed.

Smog check

Residents of the 400 block of Rosalie Drive reported suspicious activity at about 3:30 p.m. on May 18: two men in a parked car, “smoking narcotics.” As the police car pulled up behind the silver Acura, it just happened to be leaving, but its driver, acquiesced to the officer’s request for a brief conversation. The 19-year-old Fairfield man said he has medical marijuana card, though not on his person, and had decided to pull over on a random street to get high. A weed grinder, glass pipe and traces of pot were found in the car. More troublesome for the suspect was his passenger, a 15-year-old male. That circumstance merited an arrest for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The teen was released to his mother.

Pedal pushers

It was no ride in the park for a meth-addled couple maneuvering their bicycles along Highway 12 at about 10:30 p.m. on May 18. A deputy spotted the familiar faces, and made a U-turn near the Acacia Grove Mobile Home Park. The El Verano man, 20, dismounted and started to walk, further piquing the officer’s interest. The man and a Sonoma woman, 20, initially claimed they were off the stuff, but then admitted to what the symptoms (and the pipe in his pocket) made clear: they were both under the influence of an illegal substance. The woman had an outstanding warrant for a prior binge. Both were jailed.
