Parade to business: Don't hold ‘Fourth’

“Saluting the Arts in Sonoma Valley” is the theme of the 51st annual 4th of July Parade, a tradition maintained by the Sonoma Community Center, and SCC Executive Director Toni Castrone is challenging entrants to be as creative – not as commercial — as possible.

“Over the past few years we’ve seen more and more commercial entrants do less and less with their floats,” said Castrone said. “I challenge the businesses in town to contribute to the excitement of the day by creating a fun entry, rather than just using the parade as an opportunity to advertise.”

The goal is entries that are creative and fun, Castrone said. “That’s what makes the parade a delight for the viewers.”

Castrone said her concerns are mirrored by comments received through a SCC survey about summer its summer events. The survey is online through June 13 at

“We look forward to hearing the feedback and suggestions of the residents of Sonoma Valley,” she said. “This is your chance to be heard.”

The 2014 parade will begin promptly at 10 a.m. on First Street East and proceed along the perimeter of the Plaza. The parade is open to all those who wish to participate, and all entrants are strongly encouraged to decorate their entries.
