In a concert of chamber music performed on period instruments, Eric Zivian, fortepiano, and Tanya Tomkins, cello, will play works by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven on Sunday, July 27 at the Hanna Boys Center.

The 3:30 p.m. concert, which also features Joseph Maile, violin, and Derek Tam, fortepiano, inaugurates the Valley of the Moon Music Festival, an annual festival where accomplished artists collaborate to bring performances of 18th- and 19th-century chamber music on period instruments, from Mozart to Schumann and beyond, to Sonoma.

“By playing this music on the instruments for which it was composed, we can get so much closer to the sound world these composers inhabited,” said Zivian.

Zivian and Tomkins are widely recognized for their craft on both modern and period instruments. Tomkins is principal cellist and a frequent soloist with the Philharmonia Baroque and Portland Baroque Orchestras. Zivian has played concertos with the Santa Rosa Symphony and Philharmonia Baroque.

“We have all heard Baroque music on period instruments, and playing classical and Romantic music on the instruments for which it was written takes this idea to the next level,” Tomkins said. “It brings the music alive in ways that are unexpected and thrilling.”

Tickets are $40, general admission, at 938.4626 or The Hanna Boys Center Auditorium is located at 17000 Arnold Drive.
