Sonoma’s Planning Commission told Williams-Sonoma officials Thursday night that if the retailer wants changes to its permitted use, it must come back with a solid parking mitigation plan.

The store, part of the highly successful retail chain, sought approval for changes of use at the 605 Broadway location, including multiple events during the year of various sizes, selling prepared foods and valet parking.

The store also asked for retroactive approval of retail display space in what had initially been approved for residential use only.

While appreciation for the store and related improvements was unanimous, commissioners expressed dismay that the residential function was never put in place as planned; instead, retail display of furniture and decorations were installed in founder Chuck Williams’ former home at the rear of the store.

Concerns about the size of events were also expressed, along with increasing traffic and parking issues on First Street West.

The matter was continued until Williams-Sonoma returns with answers and specific plans as requested by the Planning Commission.

  1. It looks as if they lied just to get a toehold and rely upon now getting exceptions – commission must not gvie in to this blackmail. That area is too crowded for parking – I do not go to williams-sonoma, but I do use the coffee shop and art museum.

  2. Lets be honest..business plans change and evolve particularly after opening a new business in a new town. While we must ask William Sonoma to provide new parking and traffic plans (as was done) we should be thankful that they want to bring jobs for young people, a fun thing for our community (Morning cooking classes for kids) and a piece of Sonoma history back to life. Let’s not push them away as has been done to so many new businesses before them..There’s a reason why we have so many vacant weed filled lots (Truck and Auto etc). We, as a community, are not welcoming to new businesses nor do we have a city that clearly defines what’s needed and when in terms of rules and regulations. Lastly there’s always parking in town! At times you might have to walk 2-3 blocks to the square but that’s a small price to pay for living in a place that so aspirational to so many people!

  3. I am in favor of the value added events that the store wants to add. They are bringing a top notch operation to town and giving some residents the opportunity to join the organization, possibly leading to further careers. There are not enough companies in the valley who can provide decent wages, benefits and career paths,

Let’s support WS and what they bring to the community.
