Springs’ highway improvements get symbolic start

2015-04-10 17.07.11Breaking ground on the Highway 12 sidewalk project are Jennifer Gray and Pat Gilardi from Supervisor Gorin’s office, Rich Lee of the Springs Community Alliance, former Supervisor Valerie Brown, First District Supervisor Susan Gorin, Tom O’Kane and Susan Klaussen, Sonoma County Public Works Department, and Eric Schen, CalTrans.

On the books for nearly 20 years, the project adds sidewalks, streetlights, curbs and gutters to the highway between Boyes Boulevard and Agua Caliente Road, where a left turn lane will also be added.

The $5.23 million Phase II links with previous improvements from south of Boyes Boulevard to Encinas Lane. Gorin acknowledged the dedication of her predecessors, Mike Cale and Valerie Brown, for keeping the project alive through tight budgets and the loss of Redevelopment Agency funds.

“Soon, school children will walk to school on sidewalks as opposed to dirt,” Gorin told the April 10 gathering. “Instead of bikes dodging cars emerging from everywhere, cyclists will enjoy bike lanes.”
