Cutting down Broadway trees would be ‘shameful’

The Sun was copied on this letter to Sonoma City Councilmember Madolyn Agrimonti

In the April 30 issue of The Sun, it is noted you are in favor of removing the beautiful red oak trees planted in 1993 between East Napa and Patten Streets.

The ‘community members’ to whom you refer are most likely some of your friends and neighbors! In 1993, the townsfolks and the City Council were all in favor of the planting And we who raised money for the trees “should be ashamed” for wanting to beautify Sonoma? And, “causing the present problem”? These civic minded folks did not cause any problem – it is the oak tree that seems to be causing the problem (whatever that might be).

Ms,.Seveneau should look for other space to lease if the tree is bothering her. And Mr. Powers, a “hero”? You want a real “hero”? Support our Wounded Warriors.

Before making your final decision on cutting these magnificent oak trees, take a ride out to 8th Street East and see the devastation wrought by clear-cutting the stand of eucalyptus. The result of that clear cutting is what you are looking at on Broadway.

I applaud Suzanne Brangham for her wisdom and foresight in the beauty that the oaks have brought to Broadway and her tireless efforts to improve our City. Those of us who worked on the Red and White Ball to help fund the tree planting are horrified to think the Council would even consider cutting them down. “Community members who originated the idea should be ashamed” I think not. It is the City Council who should be ashamed to even give clear cutting a passing thought!

Surely there is another alternative.

Respectfully,

  1. It takes a long time to replace trees nearly 25 years old; replacing concrete takes only a couple of days. The city needs to step up, take responsibility for the Broadway sidewalks and do its job.
