Floats for the Fourth

Posted on May 19, 2015 by Sonoma Valley Sun

IMG_5715-MThe Sonoma Community Center is now accepting applications for its 52nd annual Fourth of July Parade & Plaza celebration.

The parade is a traditional, small-town celebration intended for of all ages, and a wide range of participation is encouraged, including individuals, community organizations, businesses, and musical entries. There is no charge to participate.

IMG_8349-MIn celebration of the Sonoma Community Center building’s 100th anniversary, the theme for this year’s parade is “A Century of Community: Celebrating Through the Decades.”

Everyone is invited to celebrate the anniversary by making an entry in the annual Fourth of July Parade highlighting a favorite era or event of the last 100 years.

“Maybe it’s the flappers and bootleggers of the Roaring ‘20s,” said Executive Director Toni Castrone. “Or maybe it’s the armed services of the greatest generation or the buttoned-down mad men and women of the ‘50s. Maybe it’s the summer of love or the moon landing. ‘70’s punk or ‘80’s hair metal… even a tribute to the year 2000 when cat videos took over the Internet, changing our lives forever.”

Winning floats are awarded prize ribbons and bragging rights. For inspiration, Sonoma Community Center is creating a Fourth of July photo archive on its website and is looking for submissions of photos or films of past Sonoma Fourth of July Parades. Contact the Sonoma Community Center front desk for information on how to submit your photos or videos for inclusion.

Download parade application forms, rules, and regulations at sonomacommunitycenter.org, or pick up an application in person at the Sonoma Community Center office located at 276 East Napa Street in Sonoma. Information is also available by calling (707) 938-4626 x 1.
