While the California State Fair doesn’t take place in Sacramento until July, the winners are already being announced for their food and wine awards.

Sonoma’s own Olive Press has won big: their famous Sevillano Extra Virgin Olive Oil won Best of Show, Best of Division and a Gold Medal. One of my favorites, the Blood Orange Olive Oil, won Best of Division and a Gold medal. I mix the latter at home with their Champagne Balsamic for a really unique, refreshing bread dip.Other olive oils made by the Olive Press won seven other awards.

“We are thrilled to win Best in Show,” says Nancy Cline, who co-owns the Olive Press with her husband, Fred Cline (and they also own Cline and Jacuzzi wineries). “Our goal is to support the growth of the California Olive Oil industry, and being a part of more competitions in state, especially statewide fairs, is huge for the olive oil community,” she said, regarding their win. This was the first time the olive oil competition was held for the Fair, making the win even bigger.

The Olive Press remains one of the most popular stops for visitors upon entering Sonoma Valley. Founded by Ed Stolman in 1995, creating the first olive press in the county and it became an early leader in developing the olive oil industry in California.
