Embedded burners

Posted on September 1, 2015 by Sonoma Valley Sun

IMG_0230Donovan and Jennifer Martini at this year’s Burning Man with the ‘Art Car’ they built in Sonoma, piloted to the Black Rock Desert and assembled as the hub of their 120-member camp group.

IMG_0187At last year’s event, when one of their fellow burners learned of Donovan’s expertise with metal work — he’s the owner of Sculptural Gates — it was suggested he build for the 2015 outing a custom vehicle, an art car, the kind of Mad Max-meets-Jerry Garcia rig well known to the roaming denizens of La Playa.

IMG_0213Working behind his Sonoma shop with donations from more than 40 supporters, Martini coordinated about 2,000 hours of design and fabrication time, transforming an old military bus into an iron-clad, moving sculpture, with a shaded dance floor on top (the crew includes a dedicated D.J.) and a chill-inviting lounge inside. Full a/c, of course, plus a monster sound system and series of programmable light arrays.
