Public meeting: Bad drivers on West Agua Caliente Road

Posted on September 15, 2015 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Residents of the West Agua Caliente Road neighborhood plagued by speeding cars, traffic and parking woes have gotten the attention of Supervisors Susan Gorin, who has called a public meeting to discuss the complaints on Monday, September 28, 6 p.m. at the Hanna Boys Center Auditorium.

“My office has heard numerous concerns from constituents about challenging driving conditions through the West Agua Caliente Road neighborhood,” Gorin said.

She has invited representatives from the California Highway Patrol, Sonoma County Transportation and Public Works, and Sonoma County Transit to participate in this meeting as well.

“The safety of our community is my top priority and I’m looking to working with my neighbors and concerned local groups to identify ways to make the roads safe again,” she said.

  1. Instead of reacting to developing problems, finish what is needed and turn this major North Bay Highway into a Freeway so all of the traffic on the insufficient strip from Santa Rosa/Farmers Lane to Sonoma Plaza isn’t forced to clog Sonoma’s roads simply because it is the only way to reach their non-Sonoma destination.

    1. Developers wanted to turn hwy 12 into a 4-lane freeway years ago and I believe all of those who proposed that idea were hunted down, killed, eaten and their skins sold for shoes.
There already is a north-south freeway called Hwy 101. True, it does not lead directly to Sonoma Plaza, but as people in Sonoma would be more than happy to tell anyone who cares to listen, they don’t want or need any more traffic through Sonoma. The vast major it of it is headed to Napa or hwy 37 anyway. (See above, re: hwy 101)

    2. Earth to Brendan: Agua Caliente Rd runs east-west, from hwy 12 to Arnold Drive. Santa Rosa is 18 miles north, on the north-south hwy 12, which does not run through the West Agua Caliente residential neighborhood.

  2. The four to five block segment of greatest concern is a high density (multifamily) neighborhood with tons of kids playing in their front yards less than 10 feet away from cars driven by people who treat this as a freeway (see Brendan’s comment above).

There have been multiple accidents already, and somebody is going to get killed if the County doesn’t do something to slow down the traffic on this short stretch soon.

  3. Turn hwy 12 into a 4 lane highway? I’ve never heard a worse idea! The beginning of the death of a small town starts contains a sentence like, “turn this major north bay highway into a freeway”.
