Keep mobile home parks affordable

Posted on April 13, 2016 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The wisdom of the 1992 Space Rent Protection Ordinance has proven itself year after year, allowing park owners reasonable return on investments and citizens, many elderly and lower income families, a safe and desirable location considerably free from excessive worry over exploitive rent increases and summary evictions.

These parks are and have been a credit to our community by their proven track record, as far as I know, for managing successful density living with good appearance to the eye and a unique fellowship in their respective neighborhoods. It is unimaginable to me that our city council would not recognize the extraordinary value these places represent to the larger social fabric of our town. It also makes perfect sense to me that subsequent laws and court findings on appropriate regulatory aspects pertaining to park management and protocols belong in a renewed ordinance that keeps the good strengths of the past and updates to today more recent refinements.

These are people’s homes, not stock certificates. There needs to be places like these where the wild ride of real estate is not being forced relentlessly on those least able to withstand the torrents.
