Fresh start for Morton’s Warm Springs

FullSizeRender (5)Wearing the uniform of sunscreen and sandals, Laurie Hobbs and Sean Wadsworth, the faces of an ownership group that bought Morton’s Warm Springs late last year, are in their first summer season of running the 19-acre facility in the hills above Kenwood.

The property was developed as a day resort in 1946 by Ethel and Harold Morton, who built pools directly on top of the geothermal mineral springs along the creek. With its huge shaded lawns, and creek side paths and barbecue pits, the getaway welcomed generations of locals and day-trippers. Hobbs said the goal is “to restore the experience,” and again make the spot a popular gathering place for all ages. Growing up in Fremont, she said, there was a pool that became a “beloved neighborhood spot,” and she looks to build that sense of community, particularly with Morton’s history of family visits.

Wadsworth said the Wappo Indians, who sought out its healing waters, considered the springs sacred. “The mineral count is amazing,” he said. He feels it’s his job to share and protect that legacy, to “value the sanctuary.” Job one was refitting the pipe and pump systems that draw the naturally-heated water from the springs into the pools Among the many on-site tasks is running the smallest water company in California – the ever-flowing springs provide water for 19 nearby homes.

The couple commutes from their Sebastopol home after working full time jobs. “This,” they laugh, indicating the beautiful hillside surroundings, “is our fulltime hobby.”
