Back to School Health Fair serves over 200 kids

bts1A Back to School Health Fair drew 380 people, 200 of them youngsters, on August 13 as the Sonoma Valley Community Health Center hosted 25 community and county-based service organizations.

The second annual event was offered free to the public by the SVCHC in partnership with Sonoma Valley Hospital, La Luz Center, El Verano Resource Center and Sonoma Valley Unified School District.

bts11-1All 200 students received school supplies and health education information. Health services included fluoride varnishes, TDAP Vaccine booster shots, and healthy recipe demos. The Valley of the Moon Lions Club performed 71 vision tests, while Sonoma Hand and Physical Therapy 16 made scoliosis screenings.

The Fun Zone included activities by Art Escape and Teen Services Sonoma. Payless Shoes and La Luz gave away 200 gift cards, and 90 backpacks were raffled off to students.

Overall, attendance about doubled last year’s inaugural event, according to SVCHC Outreach & Event Coordinator Maricarmen Reyes. “The committee hopes to expand the fair in 2017 and is looking forward to the community’s continuous support, she said.
