Not the first ‘Spring Festival’

Posted on September 9, 2016 by Sonoma Valley Sun

As someone who has been living and actively engaged in community affairs in the Springs for 26 years, I’m writing to correct a significant inaccuracy in Susan Gorin’s August 18 column.

She claims that the upcoming Springs Festival will be “the first ever.” This is not true. As was recently reported in Sonoma Valley’s other newspaper, back in the 1990s the community held a similar type of event called “Spring in the Springs.” It was organized by local businesses and community members with staff support from Hal Beck, the CEO at the time of the Sonoma Valley Chamber of Commerce. It was held in the Fiesta Plaza shopping center parking lot and had food booths, activities for the kids, music, and information tables by community organizations. I’m sure if one were to dig deeper into the Springs’ history there were other festivals that preceded “Spring in the Springs.”

Many hands over many years have contributed to improving the Springs. There is no start date or stop date, but continuing progress. There is also still the unfinished segment on the east side of Highway 12 by Donald Avenue that has no sidewalk.

My duties as President and Area One Trustee of the Sonoma County Board of Education will take me out of town that weekend, so I’ll be unable to attend the Springs Festival. Have fun everyone.
